Weekly Market Wrap: AI Hype Fuels Gains and Earnings Kickoff

The stock market ended the week on a high note. A big boost came from the excitement around SK Hynix’s Nasdaq debut, which reminded investors about the AI trade.

What’s in this update?

  • Earnings season starts
  • New ChartLists page
  • Upcoming OptionsPlay live event

Technology stocks are back in focus. Semiconductors and the so‑called Mag 7 have woken up, giving the whole market a needed lift. The S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, and Dow Jones are all trading above their 21‑day exponential moving averages.

Earnings Season Kicks Off

Next week the spotlight shifts to big banks. The KBW Bank Index is climbing strong and is beating the S&P 500 by about 7.7%. It is also just a few decimal points away from its record close, so expectations are high. Now the banks must deliver solid results.

The same pressure applies to tech giants. If banks and mega‑cap tech companies post good earnings, the S&P 500 could push toward a new all‑time high. The chart below shows how strong recent earnings have been.

Earnings chart

Earnings season is exciting but can feel overwhelming. Many companies report at once, so staying organized helps. One easy way is to set up scans that flag upcoming earnings. You can still use an earnings calendar, but a scan runs faster and leaves you time for the World Cup or Wimbledon.

Since banks are the main focus next week, a simple scan might look like this:

When I ran the scan, it returned 18 stocks. I saved the list to an "Earnings" ChartList so I can watch how each stock moves after its report.

Your ChartLists Page

StockCharts has added a new "Your ChartLists" page. Clicking the ChartLists button now opens a dedicated page that looks familiar but includes a few handy upgrades.

For example, before next week’s earnings scan, I can clear the entire ChartList with one click, ready to add fresh results. I’ll later tweak the scan to include other sectors once most banks finish reporting. It takes a little work, but it’s far quicker than checking each stock by hand.

Scans are very flexible. They can speed up decisions for both stocks and options. Options traders know how much time it takes to pick the right underlying security and then choose a strategy.
